Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club
The Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open is an event held at the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club. Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas is a small town located North of San Antonio. The Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club opened in 1978, and boasts quite an interesting history. Originally owned by Ralph E. Fair Sr., the clubhouse itself is in fact the original home of the Fairs. Ralph E. Fair, Sr., a successful oilman and rancher, purchased several land tracts in the 1930s that eventually became the 5000-acre Fair Oaks Ranch. Ralph Fair Sr. and his wife passed away in the 1960s and heirs to the Fair family slowly began to develop the area into the community that it is today. The 14,000-square-foot Fair house was converted into a clubhouse in 1978 and kept all of its original attributes, the only addition originally added was a men’s locker room. There is an obvious “homey” feel to the clubhouse, which gives it a unique character. A portrait of the Fairs sits in the main entrance, and photos of the Fairs working on the ranch can also be found throughout areas of the clubhouse.
An interesting aspect of the Fair Oaks Ranch community is the deer population. The deer in this community frequent the golf courses almost as much as the residents. They can be found in large numbers lounging by the greens and fairways and walking up to golfers in the hopes of receiving a treat. The AJGA staff was not accustomed to this sort of interaction with the deer and enjoyed quite a few entertaining moments while out on the courses during the tournament this week.
The Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open has been held at the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club for 4 years as of this year. The event itself has been held for the past 23 years in the San Antonio area. The first winner of this event was Tiger Woods in 1992, an impressive history for this event!
