50th Year Anniversary

While the Under Armour® / Jeff Overton Championship celebrated its second year in Columbus, Indiana, Otter Creek Golf Course celebrated its 50th year anniversary. First opened in 1964, the original 18 holes were created by Robert Jones Sr. In 1995, Rees Jones, Robert’s son, added another nine holes to complete the 27-hole championship course. Otter Creek has hosted a variety of events, including state amateurs, NCAA Division 1 regions, three Big Ten national championships, USGA public links championships and several AJGA Junior Championships. Past AJGA winners at Otter Creek include Phil Mickelson, who won here back in 1988.

AJGA and Otter Creek honor military

In honor of July 4th and the military, the American Junior Golf Association and Otter Creek Golf Course invited local current and retired veterans to be a part of the Under Armour® / Jeff Overton Championship. Retired Air Force Major General Mark Pillar served as a member of the Tournament Committee and was in charge of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich stations. Pillar served in the Air Force for 37 years. Army SSG James A. Stofel pulled the flag for every Junior-Am group as they finished No. 18 on Monday. Stofel has served 16 years in the Army and is stationed at the Indiana National Guard. “I enjoy fighting for our freedom and for our country,” Stofel said. “It means the world to me. I live and breathe it everyday.”

Over 270 volunteers

Over 270 volunteers helped the AJGA staff at the Under Armour® / Jeff Overton Championship hosted by Otter Creek this year. Volunteers worked 4-5 hour shifts every day of the tournament, totaling about 1200 volunteer hours. The Tournament Committee hosted a special dinner on Sunday evening where AJGA staff and interns were able to interact and share some nicknames with several members who would be volunteering throughout the week. Volunteer Chairman Jim Dietz said the high turnout was a result of volunteers from last year returning and asking their friends and family to help out with this year’s event. “I’ve already had people tell me to they want to sign up for next year,” Dietz said. “It’s really cool to have this kind of support. The volunteers say they love to do this because the kids are so polite and courteous, and so are the parents. This is like a vacation to them. They are thrilled to help out and love being a part of this event.”

College Coaches Panel

The Under Armour® / Jeff Overton Championship hosted by Otter Creek held a College Coaches Panel during the Junior-Am Monday morning, which provided an opportunity for parents and juniors to learn more about the world of college golf. The panel consisted of college golf coaches from Indiana, Indianapolis, and BallState. The coaches gave advice, insight and answered any questions parents and juniors had about getting the juniors to the next level of competitive golf.
