Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Preseason Junior at
Nemacolin was a 36-hole stroke play competition played on the Links Course at
Nemacolin Woodland Resort. The event featured 72 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18,
from 12 states and four countries. The Boys Division played the course at
par-70 6,295 yards while the Girls Division played the course at par-71 5,458
yards.

Lions, tigers and bears oh my

The Nemacolin Woodlands Resort features an abundance of activities including
off-road vehicle training, ski instruction and an airport for landing private planes.
But it’s the animals that are the largest attraction.

On site, only a few hundred feet from the golf course a pair of lions roam
wolves pace in their cages and horses graze.

Golf is front and center at the Nemacolin Woodland Resort’s pair of
top-flight courses, but the animals are a great compliment. On a typical walk
near the Links Course you can see a rare white lion, white tiger and a trio of
black bears bathing in the water.

Dude, where’s my cart path?

The Links Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is a sprawling course with
wide fairways and a hilly landscape. Playing at only 6,658 yards from the tips
it isn’t a long course, but their quick greens present a major challenge.

However, it’s the drive down the fairway that could be the most enjoyable
aspect, because you get to go off-road. The first nine holes on The Links don’t
feature cart paths on the fairways, meaning you feel every bump on the fairway
as you streak toward your ball.

Maggie Magerko took full control of the resort in 2000 and decided to leave
the front nine in the traditional style that she found it, but she did at carth
paths for the entire back side of the course.

PGA Tour history

The Links isn’t the only course that calls the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort
home. The resort also features the Pete Dye designed Mystic Rock, which hosted
the 84 Lumber Classic from 2003-2006.

Mystic Rock is a massive test at 7,750 yards and is considered among the
best public courses in the country. It has received top honors and ratings from
many golf publications, including Golfweek.

The Berlin Wall

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is also home to one of the most extensive art
collections in the world. The Hardy Family Art Collection, valued at over $45
million, consists of nearly 1,000 individual pieces from paintings to
sculptures.

However, perhaps the most impressive, and historic, piece on site is a piece
of the Berlin Wall. The piece was a gift to the founder of Nemacolin Woodlands
Resort, Joseph A. Hardy III, from Lord Peter Palumbo, a friend of the English
royal family.

First time success

Playing in your first AJGA event could be overwhelming, but Thomas Steve
took the challenge in stride at the Preseason Junior at Nemacolin.

His two-day total of 3-over-par 143 earned him medalist honors in the Boys
Division, and perhaps more importantly, gives the soon-to-be high school senior
some self-belief moving forward.

“The win gives me a lot of confidence going into the summer and hopefully
some bigger events,” Steve said.
