Wyndham Watch: the road to Wyndham Cup

Posted on Updated on

Welcome to the first edition of the Wyndham Watch!
Throughout the next few weeks, I will be profiling the prospective team members
who will face off in the annual east-versus-west team match play tournament
called Wyndham Cup.
The teams are chosen based on Polo Golf Rankings, which
reward top finishes in national junior golf events.

The 2013 Wyndham Cup will be played July 15-18, at The
Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe for the first time. Who will get the opportunity to
play at this prestigious course and prove their ground as they represent the
red or blue? Follow along as I profile potential team members who will cheer
“Go East!” or “Go West!” in the 24th running of one of the AJGA’s marquee

How are players
chosen for the Wyndham Cup?

Team eligibility will be based on the following criteria:

  • Must be 12-18 years old.
  • Must be current AJGA members in good standing to
    receive an invitation.
  • Must have competed in a minimum of two AJGA
tournaments between January 1 and June 21, 2013.
  • The top nine boys and top nine girls residing east
of the Mississippi River will be invited based on the Polo Golf Rankings as of
    June 18, 2013.
  • The top nine boys and top nine girls residing west
of the Mississippi River will be invited based on the Polo Golf Rankings as of
    June 18, 2013.

NOTE: In the event
that an original top nine invitee is unable to participate, the replacement
player will be invited based on the current Polo Golf Rankings in effect at the
time the spot becomes available.

The final spots on each team will be awarded to the boy and
girl with the highest Polo Golf Ranking as of July 12, 2013 who were not
already eligible and who participated in the 2013
Rolex Tournament of Champions

East Team

Sitting atop the East Team priority list are
Thunderbird International Junior
champions Jorge Garcia and Nicole
. Garcia is No. 2 on the list at 64.07 points after Robby Shelton, IV, who has 75.21
points. Morales claimed the top spot as No. 1 on the priority list after her
second AJGA Invitational victory at 55.55 points. Second on the girls’ side is Karen Chung at 52.24 points.

West Team

Four Texans are within the top nine on the West Team
priority list after success at the Thunderbird International Junior. Scott Scheffler of Dallas and Austin Connelly of Irving tied for
second and are in the second and fifth spots on the priority list, respectively.
Brad Dalke of McKinney and Matt Gilchrest of Southlake tied for
fifth at Grayhawk Golf Club and are in the first and sixth spots, respectively,
on the priority list.

As for the girls, Amy
third-place showing at the Thunderbird International Junior put her
at No. 2 on the priority list at 46.43 points. Andrea Lee sits in the fourth spot of the priority list after her
fourth-place showing at Grayhawk Golf Club. Bethany Wu is in the third spot on the West Team’s priority list
behind the strength of her win at the 2013 ANNIKA Invitational.

Until next time, go big red… or west coast, best coast? I’ll
have to keep my loyalty under wraps for now!
