The 2012 Preseason Junior at Château Élan kicked off the summer season this weekend in Braselton, Ga. This week also welcomed the start of intern training week for the AJGA summer internship. Here are a few highlights of this weekend’s event.

INTERN EXTRAVAGANZA: Fifty-four summer staffers traveled from around the country last Sunday, May 20, arriving at AJGA National Headquarters to partake in a summer internship for the organization. Forty-five colleges and universities are represented among the 2012 summer staff. For many, their first AJGA tournament experience was the Preseason Junior at Château Élan.

HOMECOMING: Duluth, Ga., resident Nicholas Coupeland played 36 holes this weekend accompanied by his father, who lives and works in Dubai and is only able to see his family fewer than 30 days a year.

DOUBLE TIME: Twin brothers Mercer and James Clark just celebrated their 16th birthday on Friday and what better way to celebrate than a trip up to Château Élan for the AJGA Preseason Junior at Château Élan? The Clark twins, from Columbus, Ga., also competed in the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior All-Star at Château Élan over Easter weekend, which James III won with a 4-under-par 209.

DELIGHTFUL DEBUTS: Medalists Tyler Hitchner of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Natalie Srinivasan of Spartanburg, S.C., were both playing in their first AJGA events.

ROCKIN’ AROUND THE COURSE: The pace of play average for round one was 4:10 – the fastest group of the day navigated 18 holes in 3:43. Way to get around the course!

CLASS IS NOW IN SESSION: The Preseason Junior at Château Élan was quite unusual as it was staffed by 54 AJGA summer staff members in addition to AJGA full-time staff. The summer staff took notes all week, passed the weekend’s test with flying colors and are now looking forward to running successful events all summer.

SPORTING NEW KICKS: Participants tried on and took home a pair of brand new FJ Sport shoes courtesy of FootJoy.

PLAYING WITH THE PROS: Earlier this season, Girls Division third-place finisher Harmanprit Kaur competed against LPGA veterans in a U.S. Women’s Open Qualifier at Dunwoody Country Club.
