Golf’s Youth Movement

From college rosters to professional leaderboards, AJGA alumni are a prevalent force in golf. Last weekend, Rory McIlroy and Ryo Ishikawa carded breakthrough final rounds and announced that they aren’t just the future of golf – they are the now.

Their wins at the Quail Hollow Championship and The Crowns prompted ESPN’s Jason Sobel to investigate golf’s top 25 golfers under the age of 25. It’s not surprising to find 11 AJGA alumni on Sobel’s list:

 

 

Kim  Anthony 1. Anthony Kim (24-year-old professional)

  • Four-time Rolex Junior All-American (2000-03)
  • Three-time member of Canon Cup West Team
  • Three career PGA TOUR victories

 

 

3. Ryo Ishikawa (18-year-old professional)

  • Advanced to match play at 2006 Polo Golf Junior Classic
  • In 2010, shot 58 to win The Crowns, his seventh career Japan Tour title

4. Rickie Fowler (21-year-old professional)

  • Two-time first-team Rolex Junior All-American (2005-06)
  • Big 12 Player of the Year (2008)

11. Yuta Ikeda (24-year-old professional)

  • Rolex Junior All-American (2003)

12. Danny Lee (19-year-old professional)

  • At the time, was the youngest champion of the U.S. Amateur (2008)

Webb Simpson213. Webb Simpson (24-year-old professional)

  • Four-time first-team Rolex Junior All-American (2001-04)
  • Won 2001 Rolex Tournament of Champions
  • ACC Player of the Year (2008)

     

 

 

18. Byeong-hun An (18-year-old amateur, signed with Cal-Berkley)

  • Two-time Rolex Junior All-American (2008-09)
  • Youngest U.S. Amateur champion in the event’s 109-year history (17 years old, 2009)

19. Jamie Lovemark (22-year-old professional)

  • Three-time Rolex Junior All-American (2004-06)
  • Two-time first-team All-American at Southern Cal

 

21. Kevin Chappell (23-year-old professional)

  • Three-time All-Pac 10 selection at UCLA (2004-07)
  • Won Nationwide Tour’s Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae (2010)

Bud Cauley22. Bud Cauley (20-year-old amateur, sophomore at Alabama)

  • Three-time Rolex Junior All-American (2005-07)
  • Currently No. 7 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking

 

 

 

 

24. Victor Dubuisson (20-year-old amateur)

  • Currently No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking
